Using å and such.

Filed under: Apple, OSX — admin @ 1:00 pm

Let’s say we want to use ü or ú or even û how would we do it?

option + n = ˜˜
option + e = ´
option + u = ¨
option + i = ˆˆ

By pressing any of those key combinations one of those symbols will appear in yellow. To use the symbol by itself simply press spacebar. To assign it to a letter that uses corresponds to that symbol such as ä you simply press the letter once you see the symbol in yellow.

What are our other options?

Try it!

Hold the command key down and don’t let go of it. Now press tab. Press tab again. Let go of command. WOW!!! You did it!!!

Now try this.

Hold the command key down and don’t let go of it. Now press tab. We’re not using that app, let’s quit it! Press Q (don’t let go of tab!). WOW! You quit it! Press tab again. Hmm, we don’t want to see that app. Press h. YOU HID IT!!!

How cool is that? :D

Basically you were tabbing through your open applications. By pressing q the program was triggered to quit just as how pressing h made the program hide itself. To bring the hidden program back simply command+tab to it or click on its icon in the dock.

Pictures and a video coming soon. <3

Make Safari Fullscreen

Filed under: Apple, Technology, Uncategorized — admin @ 4:11 pm

Simply drag the following link to your bookmarks area uptop.

When it asks you to type a name simply type, Full Screen or whatever else you would like.

Watch Video

This comes in handy when browsing webpages such as maps.google.com

Also if you’d prefer safari, or any other app, to always open using the entire screen you can drag the window to fill the screen, then hold the command button, while holding the command button close the window.

Using tab to select buttons in OSX

Filed under: Apple, Technology — admin @ 3:58 pm

Command+Q! You’re quitting an application. Now you’re presented with something like this:

You have the choice to click on a button, press escape on the keyboard to close the window, or to press enter and choose the highlighted option; whatever it may be.

What if you wanted to choose an option that wasn’t highlighted and you didn’t want to use your mouse? This is where being able to press the tab key to select a button would come in handy.

In OSX this functionality while built in is not enabled by default. In order to do so one must open System Preferences, Select Keyboard & Mouse, choose the Keyboard Shortcuts tab, and then select the All controls radio button towards the bottom.

^ Open System Preferences ^

^ Choose Keyboard & Mouse ^

^ Select the Keyboard Shortcuts Tab ^

^ Choose the All Controls Button ^

Now close the System Preferences window.
From now on when presented with a dialogue that has buttons you’ll have the ability to press tab to highlight the option you’d like.

Once highlighted simply press spacebar to finalize your selection.

Free Wi-Fi access to AT&T iPhone Customers (ALMOST)

Filed under: iPhone — admin @ 1:09 pm

The service was launched prematurely and doesn’t work any longer. It should work in the future though.

Apparently anyone with an iPhone and service through AT&T are now able to connect to Wi-Fi at Starbucks, Barns & Noble, and any other AT&T wireless location.

AT&T Wi-Fi
*enter your cell phone number, then agree*

It’s possible to connect with your laptop, if you have a mac running safari. I’ll write more when I’ve had a chance to check it out for myself.

Basically a page will load asking you for your phone number. Then you agree to their terms of use. You should now be able to browse the internet. :]

Oh and to all you Renites out there. AT&T WiFi in Reno.

Using Spotlight

Filed under: Apple — admin @ 7:03 pm

Imagine, if you will, you’ve lost an important file. You can’t figure out where you put it. You do however remember its name. What you need now is the ability to run a search.

In OSX it’s quite easy to find a file you’ve lost. Simply click the little magnifying glass at the top right of the screen and type in the file’s name. You are then instantly presented with results.

This instant search technology on a mac is called spotlight. Windows Vista offers a functionality which is similar. Vista’s instant search is located in the start menu. If you’re using Windows XP google offers an excellent instant search application called Google Desktop.

To activate spotlight, as mentioned before, you can click the magnifying class toward the top right of your screen. Alternatively you have the option to press command+spacebar. This opens the spotlight typing area. You can now start typing. Use your arrow keys to select the file you want and then press enter to open the file. Also, you could click on the specific file you want to open.

Another amazing feature spotlight offers is the ability to do math. It can do some fairly simple stuff such as 1+1 but it also has the ability to do some pretty powerful math such as 10! which is the equivalent of 10×9x8×7x6×5x4×3x2×1.

Spotlight also has the ability to look up definitions. For more details about using spotlight check out the following video.

These files will all save in a format called PNG if you’re using Tiger or Leopard. If you’re using Panther it’ll be PDF and if you’re using Jaguar it’ll be JPG.

To choose which file you’d prefer to save them there’s a neat hack.

Open the application called terminal located in the utilities folder which is located in the applications folder.

/Applications/Utilities/Terminal

Type the following two commands into the terminal window and press enter after each:

“defaults write com.apple.screencapture type image_format

then

“killall SystemUIServer”

image_format above can be whatever you’d like it to be; jpg, tiff, pdf, png, bmp and others.

Why can’t I take screen shots while a DVD is playing?

Filed under: Apple, Entertainment, Technology — admin @ 3:23 pm

It’s a copyright issue. They think you’re going to be doing things you’re not allowed to. If you really need to however all you need is VLC media player. Start the DVD and take a screenshot when you’re where you want.

For more info on installing and using VLC media player visit this link.
